There were some things that Dr. Shankar Dey experienced really late in his life, like electricity, for instance. For 13 years, he studied under the flickering flame of a candle. Yet, the struggles continued. He lost his sister to leukaemia when she was eight, and he was only ten years old. His father, a rickshaw-puller couldn't afford her treatment. However, he learned important life lessons from the experiences of her death and the hardships of life from studying under the dull light of the candle.

a marathon of change

The TATA Mumbai Marathon is an annual event which is eagerly awaited by runners, philanthropists, and enthusiasts every year. WE Foundation participated in the Tata Marathon on 20th January 2019 with 15 adolescent girls from our Youth Friendly Centre in Dharavi, self-defence trainer Jameel, social worker Meera, yoga trainer and running enthusiast Niveditha, and four our board members.

fighting for change

The WE Foundation conducted several initiatives at the Youth Friendly Centre in Dharavi, which became a safe and comfortable physical and psychological space for learning and interaction for young girls from underprivileged backgrounds. The girls had access to a library with over 500+ books, pamphlets, audio-video material, flipcharts and magazines on education, entertainment, information, sports and employment.
