Dr. Duru Shah is one of India’s leading Gynaecologists, with a professional practice spanning 35 years. Dr. Shah believes that women’s health and empowerment are closely linked and interconnected, and that unless women are educated and empowered, they cannot take complete control of their state of health. In 2015, along with a team of experts in the field of adolescent and public health and social development, Dr. Duru Shah founded the Women’s Empowerment Foundation. The aim was to empower young girls with the right knowledge on their reproductive and sexual health, and make them self-sufficient through upskilling and self-defence training. Today the We Foundation and Metropolis Healthcare’s CSR wing have come together to form Metropolis Foundation. Dr. Shah believes that propelling the youth from marginalised homes with the right knowledge, attitude, training and support, and facilitating their inclusive participation in communities can truly transform the future of India. "Make the Majority Our Priority" is a belief that’s rooted in her motto. Dr. Shah’s professional journey has witnessed academic milestones, global recognition, and a lifetime spent dispelling dangerous myths and reinforcing health messages. She has led national programs as the President of The Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), the Founder President of ‘The PCOS Society India,’ and has collaborated with Organisations like UNICEF and the Government of India. She is the first and only Indian to be honoured with the prestigious “Distinguished Merit Award” for her service towards women’s health by the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FIGO) in October 2012. She was recently awarded the ‘Mahatma Award’ for her work towards women’s health.
