WE Foundation conducted several initiatives at the Youth Friendly Centre in Dharavi, which became a safe and comfortable physical and psychological space for learning and interaction for young girls from underprivileged backgrounds.
The girls had access to a library with over 500+ books, pamphlets, audio-video material, flipcharts and magazines on education, entertainment, information, sports and employment. They also created the ‘Reading Club’ to pick a book and describe the story in English to the group.
The most impactful parts of the program were the self-defence lessons which were curated in a way that addressed the unsafe and risky situations the girls both unmarried and married found themselves in, such as domestic violence and neighbourhood threats of sexual assault. They learnt how to use common objects such as dupattas, pens and purses as techniques to protect themselves. This program faced many challenges initially, as the girls belonged to communities where the women were not allowed to participate in such activities or have male trainers. What started as a small group of 30 girls soon multiplied as the parents saw a huge change in not just the confidence and self-esteem of the girls but hope for their better future. The Foundation empowered more than 650 girls between the ages of 12 to 21 years. Many girls then became trainers themselves and underwent advanced courses to train newly enrolled girls.
The program had a tremendous effect leading to the formation of ‘WE Warriors’ - where girls became the medium of information for other girls in the community. The girls were also equipped with financial literacy, and with training and guidance on different vocations to facilitate job opportunities. Many girls who never dreamt of seeking employment found parental and family support to contribute as earning members of the family.
A whole new world opened up for the girls with job opportunities as LIC agents, computer class trainers, self-defence trainers, and corporate and retail jobs. It helped young women to protect their rights, safeguard themselves, earn a livelihood and be economically independent, making them ready to face the challenges of life. This learning centre empowered the local community to become change-makers.
